Career Advising System

Our career services are delivered through the combined efforts of our team that includes physician career leads, career counsellors and writing specialist, as well as administrative coordinators. Our integrated advising approach ensures that career advising is embedded throughout your experience – within the curriculum (Career Advising & Preparation (CAP) Longitudinal Curriculum), through guidance by physician career leads, individual career advising sessions, writing supports, tailored workshops, customized career resources, and mentorship programming.

Career Advising & Preparation (CAP) Longitudinal Curriculum Year 1-4:

Starting in Foundations and extending through Clerkship, the CAP curriculum provides students with opportunities to identify and explore their personal and career interests and goals, explore careers through shadowing placements, understand how to choose a specialty, and how to prepare for CaRMS.

Individual Sessions with Physician Career Leads: Electives Advising

Our Physician Career Leads offer a range of supports throughout your journey. The Director and Assistant Director of the Career Advising System as well the Faculty Career Lead for Black Learners are available for guidance from a clinical and professional perspective to help you navigate your career decisions and map out your electives strategy. You will also have the opportunity for one-on-one meetings with physician career advisors in Year 3 to discuss your electives strategy. 

Individual Sessions with Physician Career Leads: CaRMS Preparation

Our Physician Career Leads are available for guidance throughout the entire CaRMS application process. The Director and Assistant Director of the Career Advising System as well the Faculty Career Lead for Black Learners are available for support with overall CaRMS strategy and preparing a strong application. You will also have the opportunity for one-on-one support with physician career advisors through the Docs-by-Docs (personal statement reviews) and Mocks-by-Docs (mock interviews) initiatives. These experienced physicians bring real-world insight to help you navigate residency preparations with confidence.

Individual Sessions with Career Counsellors:

Sessions with our career counsellors are available throughout medical school for support with areas such as specialty exploration and career decision making, building your portfolio, CaRMS preparation and strategy, CV and personal statement reviews, interview coaching and support for unmatched learners.

Individual Sessions with Writing Specialist:

Sessions with our writing specialist are available for support with all your important writing projects such as CaRMS personal statements, scholarship applications, and early-stage writing projects and manuscripts.

Career Related Workshops, Resources and Guides:

We offer timely and informative workshops on topics such a creating your CaRMS CV and crafting your personal statement. These are accompanied by a variety of related career resources and guides to support your ongoing learning and development.

Supports for Unmatched Learners:

Our support for unmatched students helps you navigate your next steps and stay on track. We offer dedicated guidance, resources, and planning support.

Black Learner Career Advising & Preparation:

Led by the Faculty Career Lead, Black Learners, participants in the BlackCAP program will have an additional community of support, aiming to increase Black learner career success and fulfillment at key transition points. The program will provide access to mentors, content to bridge gaps in knowledge, and skill-building in communication and strategic decisions for Black learner career success.
